It Matters: Why you need to give back

Growing up in the inner city shaped who I am today and I can't remember one Christmas that didn't involve donations from the Christmas Bureau and Santas Anonymous.

Even though it was something my mom needed to do, I knew that when I was able to, I would find a way to give back to those charities because I remember how she went from shame to a sense of entitlement when it came to applying for hampers and presents. For her, it was, and still is, a way of life.

But it's not that way for thousands of other people who need these services and giving back, in my opinion, starts at home. Breaking the kind of cycle that I did - abusive relationships and living on welfare - wasn't really an option for me; I just never wanted to end up like my mother.

Delivering toys for Santas Anonymous our dropping off a donation for the Christmas Bureau doesn't take a lot of effort or time but it makes a difference to so many people who truly rely on these initiatives during the holidays. It made a difference when I was a kid and I never forgot it.

This year, 65,000 Edmontonians need the support of the Christmas Bureau and in order to help them the Christmas Bureau needs to raise $1.8M.

In order to do this, they are having a series of campaigns running Nov. 17 until Dec. 24:

Santas Anonymous also requires volunteers and donations (especia. Delivery of the toys is Dec. 15 & 16 this year. The depot opens at 10 am but if you plan on delivering toys, be sure to be there early as there is always a long line of people who help out for this event. That doesn't mean they have enough volunteers either so don't  use waiting in line as an excuse not to help out either. Santa is watching....

How will you give back this year?

**update** If you're tweeting about Santas Anonymous or the Christmas Bureau, be sure to use the hashtag #musthavegifts Follow them on twitter, too... @SantasAnonymous and @ChristmasBureau #yeg

Time to exorcise these demons, these motherfuckers are doin' jumpin' jacks NOW!

Not Afraid by Eminem on Grooveshark
Yeh... I stole that title from Eminem's "Not Afraid"... and this is why:

There was a time when I would blog about my past, tell my sordid stories of growing up in the inner city of Edmonton and over share WAY too much of my life with anyone who felt comfortable reading about it. I haven't done that for a while, mainly because my life is off limits as far as posting about it (plus you would be bored to fuck reading about my dinner menu or how I purged Lola's room for the 10th time this year, seriously who GIVES a shit about that shit?)

But what I have always been open about is my past, my battle with depression and my grief over losing too many people in my life WAY too soon...

So.

Tonight.http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/story/2012/08/08/edmonton-cromdale-torn-down.html I come home from a *shrugs* meh metiocre tweetup only to be thrown into the Tweets of Fire about the demolition of THE CROMDALE. For anyone who knows me or has read my story, you will KNOW what this means to me.

This tweet came through:
Selffop9:07pm via Twitter for iPad
“@TimAdamsCBC: Cromdale no more #cbcpic.twitter.com/UHTm5T6n” @YouAreFIERCEwhataya know - yeah!

Then, my dear friend Jaimie Clements (who I met three years ago BECAUSE of this whole Cromdale bullshit) sent this: Jaimieclements9:49pm via Web
@YouAreFIERCE The Cromdale Hotel is no more! Crumbling to the ground as we speak.

Watching that building come down brick by brick, layer by layer, I can only equate it to how the Cromdale stripped away my own mom's life. She left her heart and soul in that building 30 years ago.

 I remember.

I remember because I watched it happen, layer by layer, brick by brick, and to watch on video the slow, torturous demolition of the Cromdale Hotel was fitting because in so many ways, it reflected how my mother's life was stripped away; slowly, painfully, and layer by layer.

My 10-year-old son came into the kitchen while I watched this video and put his arm around me, asking, "Mom, did you know the people who lived there?"

I smiled through my tears and said, "One day, you will know why I'm crying about this."

He held me tightly and kissed my cheek.

"I love you mom." "Yeh," I said, swatting his ass. "I love you too."  I didn't want him to see my pain or question why the demolition of this building he had never seen, meant anything to him. One day he will know what happened to me and why the demolition of the Cromdale Hotel has me in tears at 10:30 p.m., but tonight is not that night.

We all have our demons, our stories, and our baggage; it's what we choose to do with them is what matters.

Lola just came in and saw my twitter stream and said, 'Mom, I came to say goodnight but did you know that YOU ARE FIERCE?" (she says 'fuhse' some sort of accent I can't explain). I said, "Why do you say that??" She pointed to my Twitter stream and said, "Because you tell everyone else that  THEY are FIERCE but really YOU are FIERCE!"

*sob*
 I broke the cycle.

My kids are happy, content, and brave.

12 Days of FIERCE Moms #7: Four Things EVERY Mom could use

by Maisie Knowles, co-founder of FreeShipping.org

1. A Day Off
If you're single, married with no kids, or a full-time working husband, you may be blissfully unaware that being a mom is a 24/7 job. There are no such things as sick days and, even in the middle of the night, a mom is "on-call." We're summoned by our children regardless of time of day, or whether we're trying to use the toilet in peace. A 24-hour period where we're allowed to sleep in, recharge our batteries, and generally not have to be a mom would be absolute heaven!

2. Pampering
There's nothing better than going for an extended massage or pedicure after a long day of being with the kids. We mostly enjoy the peace and quiet, but it's really nice to have someone else take care of us for just an hour or two. **FIERCE Tip: NVEInstitue in Edmonton has a wonderful array of services to choose from including a Digital Detox, Festival of Joy or even the Euro Cocooning. Of course, you could always enter to win the Empower Me Package!

3. A Shopping Spree for Me
We don't want the company of our loving husbands or adorable children for our shopping spree. Just give us some gift cards to our favorite stores and send us out the door. And we don't want to shop for our kids, we want to shop for OURSELVES, since our bodies completely changed after having those cute little kids and nothing really fits quite right anymore. *FIERCE Tip: Get her a gift card from Keylime Athletic Wear in Sherwood Park! Getting in shape can be fashionable too! PLUS Keylime has a new location opening in City Centre Mall!

4. A Clean Car
Yes, we know this is a strange request, but the minivan is a mess. There are Cheerios and Goldfish crackers that have been stuck in unreachable places for years. We just want to "de-kidify" our cars for a little bit. Better yet, remember that shopping spree? How about a fun, clean rental car for us to drive around while we're shopping! *FIERCE Tip: Tamara has tested a few of the Ford vehicles and is a real fan of the 2012 Ford Explorer in all it's luxurious glory! But if you want something zippier try renting the 2012 Ford Focus.

If this seems a little much, we'd be happy to switch lives with you for one day; But only one day because even though being a mom is the one of the hardest jobs in the world, we do love every sticky, smiley, cranky, stinky inch of our children and can't bear being away from them for too long!

4. Lash out!
Book yourself into Lash Affair and join the Lash Addicted like me! I love lash extensions because when I wake up I look even more FIERCE than I usually do! No fuss, no muss, no mascara application, just get up and go! This is a beauty indulgence for you, your BFF or the "tough to shop for" mom in your life!

Individual lash extensions come in a wide variety of lengths and thicknesses. Any look can be created from girl-next door, to ultra-glam-diva lashes (and everything in between). Lash Affair's experienced technicians apply extensions one by one by isolating each of your natural lashes, and applying an extension with medical-grade adhesive formulated specifically for use around the eye area.
The application is painless, and most women fall asleep! Individual lash extensions promote a healthy shed cycle for your natural lashes and cause no damage to natural lashes.
Results last around 6 weeks, but can last indefinitely if proper fills appointments are maintained.
Do it. Book the appointment. You won't be disappointed!

5. Take a day trip to the local gardening centres!
It's that time of year when we start planning our gardens so why not indulge in a short day trip to check out all of the local gems! Some of our local faves include Ellerslie Gifts & Garden which has a fantastic little bistro to indulge in a light lunch or snack. It just opened for the season and is open Daily 9am - 8pm except for Statutory Holidays (10am - 6pm). Easy to get to from the Anthony Henday too! 10330 Ellerslie Rd SW.

Another south west gem is the Dunvegan Gardens. Don't judge them by their website. This little treasure has some wonderful plants, fantastic service and is only 10 minutes from the Lessard exit on the Henday. Head a little further west to Carvel General Store just 10 minutes west of Stony Plain and you will be surprised at the cool trinkets, decor and "OMG I gotta HAVE that" finds you will see!

The daytrip possibilities are endless but it's another great way to spend some alone time or indulge in a mother/daughter day.

LML: Love My Lashes

Since 2010, I have been addicted to Lash Extensions, and over the past two years I have learned a lot about what works for me and what doesn't when it comes to this cosmetic indulgence.

Ugh, this is me in all my natural beauty! No lashes. Pre-Lash Affair
My lashes are short and naturally blonde but my eyes are my best feature so I like to make them pop with luscious lashes. After being contacted by Lash Affair in Edmonton to try their Mink Lashes, I decided to explore my Lash options and try something other than the semi lashes I was used to wearing.

Courtney, the owner of Lash Affair, was extremely professional in her application of the Mink Lashes, answering all of my questions and information about their other products and services. Lash Affair is strictly a Lash studio and currently a home-based business in southwest Edmonton but Courtney says they will be opening a retail space this summer to better serve their clients.
This is post-Lash Affair. Clearly a HUGE difference, very natural looking.
I'm used to lash extensions being full, thick and having that WOW factor but I didn't get that with the Mink Lashes. Instead, I got a naturally embellished look that went unnoticed by Big Daddy but when I pointed it out, he was far more impressed with the lashes than I thought he would be.

He liked the natural look of the lashes and preferred that I didn't look like Kim Kardashian (I actually rolled my eyes just now, writing that comparison, because we all know I am clearly her twin). He said the semis were "too much" and that the Mink lashes were much nicer, and far more classy than the semis. HA! I snicker every time I mention semis and Big Daddy in the same sentence.

Mink Lashes after 3 Weeks

What I liked about the Mink Lashes from Lash Affair is the natural feel of the lashes and the fact that they are so light-weight that it doesn't feel like you're wearing extensions. Quite the opposite, really. I've had these lashes for almost 3 weeks now and, despite the lack of WOW factor, I am impressed with the durability of these lashes. I was unsure for the first week, thinking they were delicate and fragile but they have withstood two viewings of the Titanic 3D movie release, a stress-related full-on meltdown that had me sobbing for about three hours (it wasn't pretty), and a night of overindulging in some rum-based cocktails (falling asleep on your face is a no-no with lash extensions).

The fact that I have such short sparse lashes to begin with makes individual lashes less dramatic on me because the lashes are being attached to what I already have. Quite honestly, I prefer to have healthy lashes once they fall out instead of the naked, bald eyes I ended up with when the semis came out.

Semi-lashes. The black liner is the adhesive not eyeliner.

What you should know

When semi-lashes fall out, they take clumps of your lashes with them. It's not pretty. I ended up with practically no lashes left after I decided not to get them filled. Have you ever had gel nails for a special event then weeks later they started popping off only to expose the unhealthy nails you covered up in the first place? But actually they were worse off because when the nail popped off, your nail beds were ripped and soft from the product? Yeh. Well. It's a similar scenario with semi lashes. The application of semis is gluing the cluster of lashes on to a group of your lashes for strength. When that cluster grows out with your lashes, it takes that clump of lashes with it PLUS any additional new lashes that grow into the lash extension. That is the biggest reason you need to get the filled or taken off professionally.

Individual lash extensions fall out with individual lashes. It's much healthier for your existing lashes What I've noticed over the last 3 weeks is that although my lashes never looked as full or thick as they did with the semis, I'm not concerned that I will look lashless when these extensions completely come out.

Mink Lashes are not cheap. A full set is $225 so depending on your budget,  you may want to consider a synthetic set which is $110.

Know what is being put on your eyes. Ask your lash tech what  adhesive is being used.

Get the sealant. Lash Affair has a little retail shelf full of Lash Lover goodies including C-2 Sealer which you can use to prolong the life of your extensions.

Lash extensions last 4-6 weeks IF you take care of them. That means, no getting them wet during the first 24 hours, beware of steam (get facials before or at the end cycle of your lashes, trust me on this), and don't sleep on your face. Click here for a full list of before/after care instructions.

Oh, the other thing I loved about these Mink Lashes is that they were fixable. Let me explain. If, by some chance you passed out fell asleep on your face after one too many Pina Coladas a tough day at the office, the lash extensions weren't irreversibly damaged unlike the semis. The semi lashes were completely set and if they were accidentally smooshed or I got hugged too roughly by Lola, my 6-year-old mini me, then they became twisted and looked weird. Also, for some inexplicable reason they always ended up looking frayed, like someone had come in the middle of the night and snipped away at them with shears.

FIERCE conclusion: Lash Affair is definitely a treat. Courtney is quite proud of the fact that they are the official Octane Lash Preferred Partner for 2012 (Oiler's Cheerleaders for those in the don't know). It's definitely the most upscale Lash salon I've been to in Edmonton (I've been to 4 all together now) as far as service, atmosphere and price goes. I am looking forward to when they open their retail space because I think it will take them to the next level of customer service.

iBlog iTweet iFace iConnect

So the bossiest mama herself, Carol McBee, has put together what looks like one helluva social media conference!

She has pulled together local social media experts and is hosting the first-ever iMedia Conference May 5 at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton.

Why do I love this? Three reasons:

One: It goes beyond the blogging community.
I'm all for blogging, I'd be a hypocrite if I said otherwise, but if your only business is blogging, I see no relevance unless your name is Perez Hilton. Yes, I'm sure I will be crucified for saying that out loud but I view blogging as a tool albeit a very important tool in your business tool box. Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, websites... they are all relevant in today's business world; it's like the margarita without the salt, tequila or ice.

Two: The experts are local!
Edmonton has a very rich pool of social media enthusiasts who have incorporated SM into building their business. For the most part, Carol has tapped some industry leaders like Walter Schwabe, founder of Fused Logic Inc. and Sue Heuman, owner of Focus Communications, who will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this conference.

Three: It's cheap!
I know what it takes to pull together events, and Carol is becoming quite the efficient and creative event co-ordinator but it's a LOT of work and a LOT of money to make this happen. She has offered the event to her Bossy Mama members for only $89 and had an early bird price of $99 (which is now over) but you can still get a ticket to the event for only $149. If you think that's too expensive consider this: the AWE puts on their annual conference for women at a rate of $600 for the 2-day event. If you choose to attend one day, it's $300.  The AWE Opening Reception is $25 and iMedia's reception is $35.

Both conferences are GREAT, I'm not saying one is better than the other BUT to attend a full-day event for $149 is pretty damn inexpensive. Perspective.

Top 5 Ways to Enjoy Valentine's Day in Edmonton

Want to try something romantical?

Check out what these places have going on:

D'lish Urban Kitchen & Wine Bar has A D'lishous Lovespell Menu featuring five tantalizing courses for only $65/pp and includes a bottle of Spanish Cristalino Cava. Add three wine pairings for $20/pp.

The Melting Pot has a week-long celebration of the most gooiest holiday of the year so what BETTER way to indulge than with fondue? Check out the various packages they have here.

The Vow. OK so it would take a special kinda guy to go see this chick flick but maybe, just MAYBE, you go with your girls and get your Channing Tatum ON! Dayum, think of the hot fantasies you'll have when you go home to him. Single? Perfect excuse to get out of the house and enjoy the luscious playground that is Channing's body. Now playing at a theatre near you.

Laser Quest: Get a group of friends, couples, girls/whatever and go out and have some fun! VD doesn't have to be seriously mushy; it can  be celebrated with the people you love. Go. Shoot them then head for drinks and food later.

A night in. Edmonton's best chocolate can be found at Kerstin's Chocolate just off of Jasper Ave. Indulge in some of the most decadent chocolate you will find, pair it with some great wine, throw on the Titanic and lose yourself in the moment. Might I personally recommend the Hot Chocolate. De. Frickin'. LISIOUS!

What are you doing for Valentine's Day?

Realize Success with AWE

If you haven't been to The Alberta Women Entrepreneurs annual conference but you need to kickstart your business into high gear, consider attending this event May 2-4, 2012 in Edmonton, AB.

Although they don't have any speakers announced yet I have no doubt they will put together something stellar. I went in 2009 when they had Ben Barry, Eveline Charles and Debby Travis, and it was highly motivational (plus I got to meet Ben who I love and adore).

This year the format seems more engaging, productive and somewhat geared towards building your own businesses.

Check it out and take advantage of the early bird pricing to be eligible to win a one night stay at the host Matrix hotel.

30 Lashes for MOM

I've recently discovered my inner girly-girl and have been indulging in some rather unusual (for me, anyway) beauty treatments.

Allow me to explain: I'm not high-maintenance. Yes, I dye my hair (I'm just blonde at heart), yes I like makeup and yes, I get fake nails every once in a while. However, I'm not that MOM who has to put on a full face of makeup and wear heels to Wal-Mart (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not me).

But lately I've been more comfortable in sweats and T-shirts (probably a direct result of my depression and indifference to my appearance) so I have had to make an effort to reclaim my fabulous old self; to look as good on the outside as I feel on the inside.

Since my eyes are my best facial feature, I decided to bring as much attention to them as possible and what a better way to do it than lash extentions! Because, let's face it, I couldn't apply false lashes if someone held my wine bottle for ransom.

In Edmonton, the choices are far and few between for good lash services so I had to look high and low until I came across Bizou Lash Studio. Always one to research online, I checked out the website only to find it was "in progress." *Note to any and all business owners: Have your damn website up and working so that potential clients can research your products prior to booking a service.

However, I did find their Facebook fan page and found a enough information for me to book a session.

I have sparse, short blonde lashes and I know that it makes it extremely difficult to adhere extentions to. In fact, I had them done at a "salon" in Spruce Grove and they fell out less than three days later. $70 and no lashes later, I was not a happy girl.

But the professionalism at Bizou blew me away. They start with a consultation, asking colour, length and style of lashes that you want/need.

The process takes about an hour and once the lashes are applied, they send you home with a sheet of instructions on care for your new FABULASHes!!

I loved these lashes. For $90, you get a full set of lashes that lasts about three weeks. I lost a few over the course of three weeks but nothing that made me think I looked (eye)bald.

Fills at Bizou are about $40-60 and well worth it.

The downside: You can not walk in off the street if you're wandering along Whyte Ave. and decide you want lashes. This is currently a "by-appointment-only" studio.

Parking on Whyte Ave is ridiculous so be prepared to pay and walk unless you luck out and find a meter outside the Studio but even then it's only 2 hour parking.

A few weeks after my fabulous experience at Bizou (when I missed my fill appointment) I found a place in the west end that offers Lash Extentions for $55!

What a BARGAIN! Because I've seen places that charge upwards of $150 for a set!

My first thought on lash extentions is "WHY are they more expensive than a full set of nails?" They take about the same amount of time to apply and they last for about the same amount of time.

The tech at Bizou said she thinks it's due to the cost of the products.

So when I found this sweet little deal at Lovella salon, I booked myself an appointment. There was no consultation, no cheat sheet for care and no fancy schmancy schitck. But there is a a Facebook page complete with information about the salon and the other services they offer.

The tech was efficient, I was able to bring my 4-year-old daughter who watched Treehouse and coloured while I got my lashes applied, and found quite the little gem of a salon in the westend.

My lashes are not as full as they were at Bizou but they still look nice. I would equate this experience to the same you would get at a walk-in nail clinic except the atmosphere is much nicer and more appealing. The salon is open 7 days a week, there's ample free parking and walk-ins are welcome.

I will update you as to how well/long they last in about three weeks.
